Rosacea
It can later present with red papules and pustules similar to acne. When men are affected, they usually develop a red nose in later ages and nodular growth and hyperplasia. This is then known as a Rhinophym. When it gets to this stage the only method of effective treatment by means of an ablative laser therapy or dermabrasion. In more serious conditions an adjuvant systemic therapy is recommended. It is a misconception that the burst blood vessels cause the reddening of the skin. This is due to the constant dilatation of blood vessels under the epidermis. It is usually due to a genetic predisposition that can be exacerbated due to prolonged UV light exposure, spicy food, extremes of temperature, coffee and alcohol consumption. For the treatment of teleangiectasias in rosacea we use the highly effective KTP-Laser. The laser energy is absorbed by the haemoglobin within the affected blood vessels to be treated and causes their immediate coagulation providing a very accurate method of treatment as the laser energy cannot be absorbed by the surrounding tissue and cause damage or scarification. The number of sittings or treatments required is directly proportional to the intensity and extent of the disease. The KTP Laser is very effective for areas that are hard to reach such as the ala nasi/nostril area and is a outpatient treatment.
